The Sacrament of Baptism
Our Lady of the Lake Parish provides formation classes for parents and Godparents. This formation meets the requirements of the Diocese of San Bernardino. The sessions will be scheduled individually in English. The prcess is the same in Spanish, but the sessions are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of every month. Parents: To begin the process for the baptism of infants and children under seven years of age, parents will need to come to the parish office to complete a Baptismal Information form. Please bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate with you at that time. After the form has been completed, an appointment will be scheduled with Fr. Len or his delegate. During that appointment the form will be reviewed and the schedule of the formation session and date of the baptism celebrations will be provided.
Sacramental Preparation - First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
The guidelines for families involved in sacramental programs at Our Lady of the Lake are as follows (all of the following criterion must be met for a child to be eligible to participate):
The child has been baptized in the Catholic Church and a copy of the certificate is on file at our office.
The child is in second grade or higher.
The child has participated in at least one year of religious education in either a parish program, Catholic school or home based program (If the classes are from another parish we need a letter from the parish where the class was attended).
The child’s family is registered at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
The child will participate in their grade level classes and their sacramental classes. Parents will participate in the parent classes when scheduled.
We will provide a retreat for each sacrament in which you and your child can participate. Parent attendance at these retreats is essential if a child is to adequately be prepared to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation or Eucharist.
Reception of the Sacrament:
A “Readiness interview” will be scheduled prior to the reception of the Sacraments.
First Holy Communion will take place during the regular parish Masses in June.
The Sacrament of Confirmation
Confirmation is a two year process. Candidates must be at least a sophomore in high school to start confirmation preparation. Candidates must be baptized in the Catholic Church and must have already received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. Participation in Life Teen and regular Mass attendance is required with no more than 3 absences from Life Teen per year. There are 7 additional classes specifically for Confirmation, all of which are mandatory. At least 1 weekend retreat must be attended during the 2 years of Confirmation, and a Work of Mercy Project must be completed each year. Candidates must also participate in liturgical ministries every week at Mass (usher, lector, altar server, music, greeter, bringing up the gifts, etc.).
Confirmation I & II classes are scheduled the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month in the hall.
RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
The RCIA process is the ordinary means by which an adult is baptized. Christians seeking full communion in the Catholic Church also receive the remaining two sacraments of Initiation: Confirmation and Eucharist. The program is designed to provide the participants with a basic introduction to the traditions and teachings of the Catholic faith as they pertain to prayer, worship, scripture, social justice, morality, church history, and the sacramental life of the Church. The sessions are developed upon the premise that conversion is a lifelong journey. There are significant events which when reflected upon, become experiences of grace and growth. It is hoped that RCIA will nurture and encourage such significant experiences of grace and growth. Children who have reached the age of reason (7), are considered adults and will also go through the RCIA process adapted for children. Those interested in Adult Confirmation would be included in the RCIA formation sessions.
